After a firm breakfast we continue our trip to the end of the world through the nature parc Torres del Paine

The Model T is admired everywhere and pictures are being taken.

It’s quiet in the parc and for a while we are following our route who should bring us to our next destination. We’re expecting an obstacle due construction work on the road, but instead we see things we saw before and we are exactly on the same road as where we started! We decide to give Ana a phone call to ask if we can stay another night in her Guesthouse.

Na een goed ontbijt vervolgen we onze reis naar het einde van de wereld via het natuurpark Torres del Paine.

De T-Ford wordt altijd overal bewonderd en op de foto gezet.

Het is rustig in het park en we volgen al een tijdje de weg die ons uit het park richting onze vervolgroute zou moeten brengen. We verwachten een obstakel op de weg vanwege wegwerkzaamheden en hebben te horen gekregen dat we misschien wel terug moeten rijden.
Echter komen we geen wegwerkzaamheden tegen en zien we herkenbare punten waar we eerder zijn langs gekomen. We zijn weer precies op dezelfde weg als waar we begonnen waren! We besluiten om Ana te bellen of we nog een nacht in haar Guesthouse mogen blijven.

We wake up early in the morning, pack the cars, prepare our lunch en leave. There has been some snow and there’s a rough wind.

We can’t find a sleeping place easy. We meet the landlord of a Guesthouse, Ana. The Guesthouse isn’t open yet, but she is willing to receive us. We are the only four guests and they specially make a meal for us. Only an outdoorguide comes along and takes place at our table.

We staan vroeg op en bepakken de auto’s en smeren broodjes voor onderweg. Er is sneeuw gevallen en er staat een harde wind.

Het landschap waarin we terecht komen is kaal en vlak en we komen nauwelijks mensen tegen.

We passeren de grens naar Chili.

Het duurt even voordat we een slaapplek vinden, bij toeval komen we de beheerder tegen van een Guesthouse, Ana, eigenlijk is ze nog niet open, maar ze wil ons wel ontvangen.
Er wordt speciaal voor ons gekookt en we zijn de enige vier gasten in het hotel. Alleen een bevriende outdoorgids komt nog langs en schuift aan.

Report 11 & 12 October By Liza After a day of rest we are driving towards the glacier.

First we visit glacier Moreno by glass boat and after that we go to a balcony from where we can see the glacier from above. The sky is grey and there is some snow, but it looks if the glacier is shining blue light.

Verslag 11 & 12 oktober Door Liza Na een rustdag rijden we richting de Gletsjer.

Onderweg komen we flamingo’s tegen.

De gletsjer Moreno bezoeken we eerst per glazen boot en daarna vanaf een aangelegd balkon waar we de gletsjer van bovenaf kunnen bekijken. Ondanks de grauwe lucht en de sneeuw lijkt de gletsjer blauw licht te schijnen.

Paso Roballos-Bajo Caracoles 101 km.
After a good night at our camp near the farm we leave for the last 300 miles to El Calefate. We guess that we will be there in two days to pick up Trudy and our new team Wouter and Liza.
We first have to drive 50 miles of road before we come to route 40, which is asphalt road.

We find a broken egg on the road, probably fall out of the air before the bird could fly.

After 6 miles Dirk heard a knocking noise under the Model T.
The wishbone of the front axle is broken.

We have to tow the Model T behind the Land Rover to a place were we can weld it.
After 40 miles of road we arrive at route 40 and indeed, after 2 weeks of gravel and of road we have asphalt again.

We continue to the small village Bajo Caracoles and hope to repair the Model T there.
There is no opportunity to weld the broken axle but we can sleep in the local hotel.
The first place were we can weld is in the village of Gobernador Gregores, 140 miles from here. We decide to sleep in Bajo Caracoles and to continue our trip tomorrow to Gregores.

Verslag 5 oktober

Paso Roballos-Bajo Caracoles 101 km.
We hebben heerlijk geslapen in ons kampement bij de boerderij.
We vertrekken om de laatste ruim 500 km. naar El Calefate af te leggen. We verwachten hier twee dagen over te doen. Daar zullen we Trudy en ons nieuwe team Wouter en Liza ophalen.
We moeten nog 80 km. onverharde weg rijden om daarna op route 40 te komen, die volgens de kaart geasfalteerd is.

Onderweg zien we een gebroken struisvogel ei liggen. Waarschijnlijk uit de lucht gevallen voordat de vogel kon vliegen.

Na 10 km. hoort Dirk een zwaar tikkend geluid onder de T-Ford vandaan komen.
Eén van de twee steunbalken van de vooras is gebroken.

Doorrijden op eigen kracht kan niet, dus gaat de Ford achter de LandRover.

Na 70 km. onverharde weg komen we bij route 40 aan; en inderdaad na bijna 2 weken geen asfalt weg gehad te hebben, komen we nu weer op een geasfalteerde weg aan.
Ook lekker, zeker met de Ford achter de LandRover.

We rijden door tot het plaatsje Bajo Caracoles in de hoop daar de Ford te kunnen lassen.
Slapen kan hier wel in het lokale hotel, maar lassen kan hier niet.
Daarvoor moeten we nog 220 km. doorrijden naar het plaatsje Gobernador Gregores.
We besluiten in Bajo Caracoles te overnachten en morgen verder te rijden naar Gregores.

Report 4 October

Cochrane-Paso Roballos 136 km.
Today we want to cross the border from Chile to Argentina via Paso Roballos.
The first 20 miles we follow the Carretera Austral before we go into the mountains to the border.
A beautiful route were we see flamingo’s and condors.

The border is only 6 month open during the summertime.
The people at the border are happy that we pass because there are only 5 passengers in one week.

After we crossed the border we took the wrong road; a road that is closed because of the snow.
A big sign gives us a warning for this but Arnaud and Dirk thinks that it is an old sign from the wintertime.
The road becomes very bad and after 10 miles we decided to go back.

Report 2 and 3 October

Villa O’Higgins – Villa O’Higgins – Cochrane
After a good night rest we are going to inform wether it is possible to go to Argentina through the Mayer Pass at O’Higgins. Unfortunately it is still not possible. They are working on a bridge, also to improve the tourism here because there is no track further than this road.
It means that we have to back for 229 km. on an unpaved road to Cochrane.
Dirk had to work at Watson so it was a good day to rest. We were working at the reports.

We are walking to the village and we feel this mystic atmosphere. We could stay here for a while for instance to write a book or so. Through a gate you enter the town.

Marjolein with a glass of wine

We heard that we are still not at the end of the Carretera Austral. We have to drive another 7 km. to the Lago O’Higgins were the road really ends. The next day we had to get up early to drive the last 7 km., make pictures and drive back to the ferry which departs at 13.00 hours. Marjolein and Angela leave their rocks, which they picked up at the beginning of the Carretera Austral, symbolic at the end of the road and made a wish.

It was a beautiful morning at the lake with special effect of the early sun.

Cows and horses walk free in the nature and sometimes they just cross as you come near by. On the ferry sitting outside at the temperature of 20 C and after that on our way to Cochrane.
