A charity tour for orphan children

Trudy and Dirk Regter from the Netherlands go on a world tour in a 1915 Ford Model T, covering all continents of the world. They are making this trip with the aim of raising money for orphans worldwide.

To date, they have driven 64,000 miles across 31 countries and have raised more than $45,000 spent on children's projects in Colombia and Bolivia. An earlier trip by Dirk in 2007 from Beijing to Paris in the Model T raised more than $140,000, of which 2 children's projects were built in Mongolia. The last part of their world tour, about 10,500 miles, takes them back home to the Netherlands via Asia. If you support the purpose of this journey, you can take ownership of some of these 10,500 miles of this final leg.

Buy your miles and thus contribute to a better future for orphans.

    November 8th – day 140

Posted on 8 November 2012 by willy

    Thursday 8 November

Dirk mounts the spare alternator definitive.

We disconnect the startbattery, we are going to drive with the lighting on, so we can check if the voltage is really too high, then the bulbs will burn..

It is cloudy this morning, very nice after the very hot day yesterday.

We stop at a coffee place with a very big shovel tire.

After the coffee brake it’s time to change cars, we drive the modelT.

Along the road there are many small saltpans.

To go to the ElephantSands campsite we have to take a piece of very loose sand. Trudy films how we go trough this, pedal to the metal!

    At 13.00 we arrive.

They created a drink bassin for the elephants in front of the terras.

It’s now the driest period of the year so many elephants are waiting until the bassin is filled.

20 driving from the campsite is a well with sweet water, they use a truck with a 5000L can, to pick up this water, 4 to 5 times per day.

The biggest bull is already waiting in the front, with his trunk for the waterhole.

In the evening they use a water hose to let the elephants drink. Some take the hose with them, fun to see!

A leppard arrives in the field, we cannot see him very good, he walks around waiting for a change to drink some water. In the end he hides in some bushes.

We putted the LandRover with rooftent beside a Lodge, no sleeping in the tent on the ground today, too many big animals around…

    Today we did 158km.

Tomorrow we go in the direction of Francistown.

    November 7th – day 139

Posted on 7 November 2012 by Rozemarijn

    Wednesday 07 November

Today we make our first day in the direction of Campsite Elephant Sands.

We want to do it in 2 days. Today we want to drive about 200km.

We leave Maun at 8. That’s a good time, its already hot.

During the trip we pass 2 National Parks.

    ostrich

Its very flat and a lot of strong wind. We see 2 small cyclones.

    cyclone

Today it’s really very hot. Dirk drives the Ford below the 60km per hour. That way the temperature of the car stay just below the 100 degrees.

During the lunch Dirk-jan cools down on the Ford.

We pass several disinfection stops. After a fridge-check and washing the shoes and tires we can go on.

It’s not always refreshing in the open car..

At 1500 we arrive at the campsite in Gwetse. There is a pool!!

    First a fresh dive!

    nice beer

At the campsite is standing a Dodge Brothers.

The steelwork is still very hard, and the engine and drive line are fully complete, a nice project..

The Ford is equipped with a start battery and a backup battery.

Dirk mentioned this morning that the Ford was not starting on the start battery only. With the backup batteries no problem.

So we check the voltage of the start battery, this is very low. We also check the voltage when the motor is running. The multimeter shows a very strange high Voltage. We call our electrical helpdesk, Bart.

He thinks the regulator is broken. This is built in the alternator, so we change the alternator with the spare one.

Still we have the strange high voltage. It´s a strange story.

    Today we did 240 km´s.

Tomorrow further in the direction of Nata.

    November 2nd – Day 134

Posted on 2 November 2012 by Rozemarijn

    Friday 2th november

Today we go towards the Botswana border, we leave the campsite at 10.30.
    We have some gravel roads.

    gravel starts

    model T off road

We drive trough Bwabwata National Park, an Elephant crosses our way. Dirk comes very close with the Ford and the elephant is a little disturbed by it.

    elephant on the way

    elephant with the model T

At 11.45 we arrive at the border. It is the most relaxed border we had in Africa.

    at the border

To enter Botswana is also very easy.
In the first village we visit an ATM. The currency in Botswana is Pula, translated as rain. 10 Pula is 1 euro.
In the supermarket we buy some cakes for the coffee stop, now that’s luxury.

    coffee with cake

The road is very good, here in Botswana they even have some speed controls

    on the road

To go to the campsite we planned, its the last one before a 150km road to Maun, we must go 15kms off road. The sign of the Campsite mentions; 4×4 only.
We are pigheaded, so we want to try.
But after a few km we get stuck in the deep loose sand.

    in the sand

We pull the Ford with the Land Rover, but after a while we decide to turn around, and search for another accommodation.
In about 45min it will be dark.
After a few km we see a sign that mentions an accommodation, so we go off the road.
It seems to be a mission post.
There is no one around there, but after asking a few people we can build our camp in the mission area.
When we unpack the cars a man comes to us, and he seems to be the owner. He allows us to stay in a house as well. We do!

    cars

It is getting dark already, Inge and Trudy make a quick meal and Dirk and Dirk-jan prepare the roof tent.

    dinner

Today we did 176km, tomorrow we go to Maun.

    November 1st – Day 133

Posted on 1 November 2012 by Rozemarijn

    Thursday 1 november

Last night we slept for the first night in the roof tent, with the snoring sound off the hippo’s on the background. It’s now our job to clean the roof tent.

    roof tent

Dirk assembles a new spare wheel for the model T.

    tyre change

Today is Dirk a film cameraman. Dirk-jan drives the model T with Dirk as co driver.
The ladies are in the Land Rover. The first part starts good. Dirk is sitting on the roof of the Land Rover and films Dirk-jan driving the model T trough the loose sand.
We drive into the national park, beware of elephants!

    elephants!

Dirk is not used to be a co driver. His feet are getting very hot, because of the exhaust pipe underneath this floor part.

    hot feet

After lunch we change car setting. Inge and Dirk-jan have a ‘romantic’ trip in the Model T.

    DJ+Inge

    We passed the Okavango River.

    okanvango river

We arrived at 16.30 on campsite Poppa Falls at Divindu. From here it’s 20 km to the Botswana border. We drove 219 km today.

We put our tents beside a little fall. We are warned by the camping owner, to be aware of crocodiles and hippo’s! It’s our own risk

    October 31st – Day 132

Posted on 31 October 2012 by Rozemarijn

    Wednesday 31 October

After packing the tent, I find out that the car keys are left in the tent, no problem according to Dirk, he has the spare ones.
We take breakfast near the Zambezi River.

    breakfast

Today we enter Namibia, a very relax border post.

    border

After changing the money by cab into the village, we enter Namibia at 12.

    Namibia

It’s a small peace of Namibie, in between Angola and Botswana. It’s called the Caprivi strip.
With a very very good road. During the ride we have our first raindrops. I do a little raindance.

    raindans

The LandRover is getting out of fuel, so we want to throw in a 20L can. I ask Dirk if he has the tankcover key……uuhhhh, we only have 1 of that.
    It’s in the Tent. Shit.
    But eventually we have it!

    the key to succes

    tanken

During a coffee brake, I ask Dirk if I can drive the Model T.
mmmmm. After driving 17.131km by himself it is not easy to let loose the steering wheel.
    But….he says; OK!
So we can cruise the Ford!

    driverDJ

On the road there are beautiful Dutch cows with big horns.

    bonte koe

At 16.00 we arrive in Kongola,
To get to the campsite we have to go through soft sand.
Some throttle on the ModelT and it runs quite good through it. Lots of fun!!
At 4pm we arrive in Kongola.

The Campsite is in a swamp, to get to the restaurant we have to go by boat. We go in between 2 hippo families, one of them follows us. No problem according to the captain, his boat is faster!

    October 30th – Day 131

Posted on 30 October 2012 by Rozemarijn

    Tuesday 30 October

This night no visit from the Elephants, slept very well.
Around the tent many trees are broken.

    trees

During the daily service of the 33!!greasepoints, we mention that the nails of the body come out. Probably caused by the off road adventures of the model T.

    Fordservice

    nail

We discuss our route with Dave, an Australian that lives at the campsite. He strongly advises us not to go trough Chobe park. It is very loose sand there and you don’t want the Ford to be a part of Africa.
So we decide to drive around the Okavango Delta in Botswana at the Westside. It will take more km’s but the road is much better. No Chobe park for us..

    overlegroute

The owner of the campsite is born in Friesland, Buitenpost. Trudy can communicate with him in Frysk.

    campsite

At 9.30 we leave Livingstone. On the road to Sesheke.

    route

It is less crowded in this part of Zambia, villages look cleaner. A nice thing to see is the way of constructing a house.

    aannemeratwork

During the trip, we hear a bang and metal scratching.
De T has a flat tire, the tire went in the woods, and the rim of the wheel is worn.

We change the set, and go on.
During the coffee brake Dirk doesn’t trust the other front tyre, so we change that one as well.

In this garage there are a lot of mosquitoes, Inge and Trudy protect themselves

    TrudyInge

When we drive over a bridge, many times the water level is very low.

At 17.00 we arrive in Sesheke, on a campsite with a very big Baobab tree. We put the tent under it. Unfortunately this doesn’t fit on the picture.

    baobab

The campsite is aside the Zambezi River, we make dinner there, during this we hear the hippo’s snoring.

Today we did 206km. Tomorrow we go for the Zambia-Namibia border.
