A charity tour for orphan children

Trudy and Dirk Regter from the Netherlands go on a world tour in a 1915 Ford Model T, covering all continents of the world. They are making this trip with the aim of raising money for orphans worldwide.

To date, they have driven 64,000 miles across 31 countries and have raised more than $45,000 spent on children's projects in Colombia and Bolivia. An earlier trip by Dirk in 2007 from Beijing to Paris in the Model T raised more than $140,000, of which 2 children's projects were built in Mongolia. The last part of their world tour, about 10,500 miles, takes them back home to the Netherlands via Asia. If you support the purpose of this journey, you can take ownership of some of these 10,500 miles of this final leg.

Buy your miles and thus contribute to a better future for orphans.

    Edit by the 2 D’s

The first of August we drive from Anzac to Lac La Biche, to make our camp there.

Tomorrow we continue our tour to Makwa Lake near by the village of Loon Lake.

This day we had many gravel roads with a lot of dust.

These bad roads are hard for most cars but not for the Model T and the Land rover.

    They just whirr on.

The next day, August 2th, we drive from Lac La Biche to Makwa Lake, a trip of about 165 miles.

Again the tour goes through huge fields and in the middle of nowhere, just at the moment we want a coffee stop, there shows up Eric’s grocery.

Eric immediately makes fresh coffee for us.

In his shop you can buy everything you need, and he says when we don’t have it, you don’t need it.

At about 6 PM we arrive at the campground of Makwa Lake and the first thing Dirk does, is jumping into the lake.

    Edit by Fred

Joe and Caren had two nice bedrooms ready for us. We slept very well. After a shower they served a nice breakfast. There was Wi-Fi, so at 9 am Dirk, Dielof and I are all very busy with the lap-top to make the information ready for internet. I had still to talk a lot with Joe, nevertheless after the coffee we had to say goodbye and thank them for their hospitality.

Our new destination is Wetaskiwin. There lives family De Goeij.

They have a big dairy- farm, milking over 400 cows. They do this with their 2 sons/wife’s and some staff. We know Ada and Jan de Goeij from our flight last week when we came from Amsterdam to Calgary.

Dielof and I had a very nice contact in the plane with Ada and Jan, and they invite us to visit them. At 5 pm we arrived at the farmhouse, nobody at home, after 10 minutes Jan shows up.

He is totally surprised when he sees the Model-T and the Land rover. At the same time Ada and her sister from Amsterdam show up, together with Ada’s daughter in law. They want to know everything about Dirks project. And Dirk is happy to tell what he is doing and why.

    Jan and Ada de Goeij

    Jan and Ada de Goeij

Ada wants to know what we’ll have for dinner and Jan suggests: pizza.

Maybe he and Dirk can go with the model T? And there they go. A special experience for Jan.

Dirk knows he needs oil for the model T. Jan knows a bulk-store. So they come back with pizza and 12 litres. Oil (donated by the shop).

    Report of Wednesday 2013-07-24
    Edit by Dielof

This morning just after 7. I wake up. The zipper of my tent is open already so Dirk has started his daily procedures. First I wake up Fred.
Where of the hell is Dirk…….
His hotel is still closed. After looking around for some time I decide to call for him, it’s a little late. Dirk opens his hotel and says it’s Wednesday, and I always am allowed to sleep a little longer.
We prepare the breakfast and start to break down our tent. After the breakfast we’re ready to leave. The save trip wishes with a nice flower for missing Trudy.

    Trudy flower

Fred films the departure of the campsite through the river again.

    crossing the river

Via Nordegg and Rocky Mountain House we are heading for Carstairs. There lives Joe, Fred’s nephew, with his wife Caren. We travel through hilly country-side. Enormous farmlands. And the road goes on. Up hill, down hill.

    hill up, hill down

    hill up, hill down

The GPS takes us directly to the address of Joe and Karen in Carstairs. The greeting was very warm.
Just to explain the situation. Joe is Fred’s nephew and Joe left Holland 60 years ago. Joe and Fred didn’t see each other that long. Nevertheless, it was a nice meeting. They talked till late in the evening with a picture-book to bring up nice memories.

    Report July 23rd, by Dielof.

Dirk zipped open our tent. He has already started his greasing-ritual. Now and than interfered by a lady or gentleman for a model-T moment.
After a nice breakfast in Banff with a delicious cappuccino up to Lake Louis. There is beside the lake a big castle/hotel from the beginning of the 20th century.

    at Lake Louise

    at Lake Louise

And than back on track again.
We have to leave the park before 4 pm. And we manage to do that just in time.
At the right of us we have a mountain range and the beginning of lake Abraham

Dielof and Dirk in the Model T

Dielof and Dirk in the Model T

At the left there is also a mountain range. There is an exit quite steep towards the lake. Time for a swim. Fred changes underwear, I go as Adam. Dirk films this all. And off we go.
Now there shows up a sign: GAS. We tank at a first nation gas station.
Dirk goes to the side the road. He has seen a campsite a little way back, off the road some 6 km. We have to go through a little stream. Model T first, Fred films it. A picture is taken.

    crossing the river

Than the Land rover follows. Good experience for Fred in low-gear. Now we are on the camping, very quiet. The “murmur “of the river in the background.
