A charity tour for orphan children

Trudy and Dirk Regter from the Netherlands go on a world tour in a 1915 Ford Model T, covering all continents of the world. They are making this trip with the aim of raising money for orphans worldwide.

To date, they have driven 64,000 miles across 31 countries and have raised more than $45,000 spent on children's projects in Colombia and Bolivia. An earlier trip by Dirk in 2007 from Beijing to Paris in the Model T raised more than $140,000, of which 2 children's projects were built in Mongolia. The last part of their world tour, about 10,500 miles, takes them back home to the Netherlands via Asia. If you support the purpose of this journey, you can take ownership of some of these 10,500 miles of this final leg.

Today we visited the SOS children village in Bahir Dar, we are welcomed by Biresaw Sime de program manager of SOS children villages.

We visit two locations; the first was a day care program. Children from poor families are taken care during the day so that the parents can work and earn some money, economically empowerment they called it. At the age of four, the kids sit in classrooms and are taught to read and write.

The second program they have here in Bahir Dar is the same as we have seen before; orphans carefully selected by the government are placed in a family structure with a mother who takes care of them 24 hours a day. The houses are clean and large, enough space for ten children, this is the maximum family size. There are twelve houses on the premises and a couple of school buildings where also children from town are being taught.

At the age of 16 the children leave the village and have to live on there own, although still supported by SOS with there finances and finding jobs.

Leuk om die kinderen op school te zien. Cas, wordt jou volgende koffie-apparaat eentje die ademt?

      Groet en geniet!
