A charity tour for orphan children

Trudy and Dirk Regter from the Netherlands go on a world tour in a 1915 Ford Model T, covering all continents of the world. They are making this trip with the aim of raising money for orphans worldwide.

To date, they have driven 64,000 miles across 31 countries and have raised more than $45,000 spent on children's projects in Colombia and Bolivia. An earlier trip by Dirk in 2007 from Beijing to Paris in the Model T raised more than $140,000, of which 2 children's projects were built in Mongolia. The last part of their world tour, about 10,500 miles, takes them back home to the Netherlands via Asia. If you support the purpose of this journey, you can take ownership of some of these 10,500 miles of this final leg.

Posted on 31 August 2012 by Rozemarijn

    Friday august 31 2012,

We did 230 km today, from Addis to Hosanna, it took almost two hours to get out of this huge city. We said goodbye to Daniel and welcomed Nataniel (Nati), he will be our new guide tillNairobi(Kenya). We drove through tree different states today, each with there special characteristics, the decorated houses we did not seen before. Late in the afternoon we reach our destination, the hotel is next to a bus station; from our balcony we have a good view on the chaos.

    August 28 – day 68

Today we reached Addis Abeba, to get there we covert a distance of 180km. Our guide Daniel had told us that it was going to be an easy day, all flat. It turned out to be “Daniel flat”, i.e. uphill; we even reached an altitude of 3100 meters.
But the scenery was beautiful, we passed man villages and because it was such a nice day, we decided it was time for an extended lunch and relax a little bit in the sun.

    August 27 – day 67

Posted on 27 August 2012 by Michiel

Today we drove from Debre Marko to Gohatsion a distance of 117 km. the ride was exciting because we had to descend 2000 meters over a very bad road. Before we went down we suddenly found ourselves in the clouds where we could see only five meters in front of us.

After that we had to ascent 2000 meters and that was to steep for the T-Ford, so we decided to tow the old car up the mountain.

Today we visited the SOS children village in Bahir Dar, we are welcomed by Biresaw Sime de program manager of SOS children villages.

We visit two locations; the first was a day care program. Children from poor families are taken care during the day so that the parents can work and earn some money, economically empowerment they called it. At the age of four, the kids sit in classrooms and are taught to read and write.

The second program they have here in Bahir Dar is the same as we have seen before; orphans carefully selected by the government are placed in a family structure with a mother who takes care of them 24 hours a day. The houses are clean and large, enough space for ten children, this is the maximum family size. There are twelve houses on the premises and a couple of school buildings where also children from town are being taught.

At the age of 16 the children leave the village and have to live on there own, although still supported by SOS with there finances and finding jobs.

    August 22 – day 62

Posted on 22 August 2012 by Rozemarijn

    Wednesday, august 22 2012,

We woke up early in the “Hilton” of Al Galabat,

    Al Galabat

the Ethiopian ladies who slept in the hallway are also awake and leaving the hotel to cross the border to their own country. Dirk and Trudy who decided they wanted to sleep in the tent on top of the land rover just outside the hotel are already packing the cars.

    Sara, the cook

Today we are going to cross the border

    crossing the border

with Ethiopia and our first guess that it would take almost a whole day was exaggerated. With the help of our new guide Daniel, who speaks Ethiopian, we are quickly through customs.

    the new guide, Daniel

The first kilometres throughEthiopiaare a real surprise, the land is green en fertile,

    all green

it’s a big contrast compared to the images you see on the tv about drought and famine.

    bird

But also here we are not alone on the road, it’s the same everywhere!

    cows again

We arrive in a town called Caila where we check in, in a cosy hotel and what’s more important: finally we can drink a nice cold beer

    at last a beer
