A charity tour for orphan children

Trudy and Dirk Regter from the Netherlands go on a world tour in a 1915 Ford Model T, covering all continents of the world. They are making this trip with the aim of raising money for orphans worldwide.

To date, they have driven 64,000 miles across 31 countries and have raised more than $45,000 spent on children's projects in Colombia and Bolivia. An earlier trip by Dirk in 2007 from Beijing to Paris in the Model T raised more than $140,000, of which 2 children's projects were built in Mongolia. The last part of their world tour, about 10,500 miles, takes them back home to the Netherlands via Asia. If you support the purpose of this journey, you can take ownership of some of these 10,500 miles of this final leg.

We’re not far from Lujan, where the SOS village is. The weather is very bad, the cover of the Model T is being pulled out.

Just before Lujan, the T Ford stops, probably a disconnection because of the rain.

The childrens village is surrounded by gates within straight houses which all look the same.
One of the gates is being opened en Diego receives us.

We only see a few children, they are inside because of the rain. The river is fludding and a tornado somewhere near, we are happy we are inside.

    Happy we arrived

We hebben nog kaasfondeu en slapen op de stapelbedden waar normaal ook de kinderen slapen onder kleurrijke kinderdekbedden.
We still have some cheesefondue and sleep on the high beds where normally the children sleep too, under colorful bedcovers.

The Landrover returns to the place.

It’s a day where we don’t drive together and have to drive in the dark.

At Las Grutas we get off the road, a touristic coastspot but now there is no one. Just as we arrive and start looking for a campsite the Model T is making strange noises and Dirk isn’t happy with it. Dirk and Trudy stay and wait and Wouter and I go look for a place to stay. As we get back Dirk and Trudy are speaking with a passenger, Jorge. He is speaking about offering a hotel and the director of Tourism, but its all in Spanish, so we try to understand. More people are arriving.

Because we drove so far yesterday it’s only a little while towards the Naturparc Penninsula Valdes, where we go to mostly to see the whales.

We made a reservation for a boat at 16.00 hrs and we arrive at Puerto Piramides from where the boat leaves at 15.00 hrs.

Before we take the boat we check out the campsite, but there is a lot of sand and first the Model T gets stuck and later on the Landrover. I hurry to the boat and hope Trudy and Dirk will still come in time. They arrive just in time and at the same moment it starts to rain really hard. We wait until the rain is over and the sky opens up.
We get on the boat and admire the huge and wonderful whales.

After we left the boat we search for a place to sleep in the village, because the campsite is wet and Wouter succeeded to get the Land-rover out of the sand. We meet a German couple who had an accident during the bad weather just now. They’re really upset. There motorhome is totally destroyed.

During the trip we meet once and a while a gaucho. Mostly they have more dogs, but this man had only one.

    A gaucho along the way

Not only do we meet a gaucho. Suddenly a lamb is running on the busy road, where big trucks drive very hard. We stop the cars and on the other side a big truck is stopping too. We get out and try to send back the lamb to the other side of the fence and look around if we can see other sheeps. But no sheeps anywhere. Wouter puts the lamb back behind the fence, but the lamb runs back.

A car stops at the Model T and we hope that this men will help us, but they just want to make a photo with themselves together with the Model T.

We decide to take the lamb with us and hope for a flock of other sheep. Again we try to put him back behind the fence, but he keeps running back. We take him with us and drive for 200 km with the lamb to the direction of Trelew.

Today we drove 500 km an we arrive late in Trelwe, where we find a very nice hotel where Angelo helps us very good, but we still have the lamb. On our way to the hotel I saw a animal clinic which seems to be open. We drive back but now it’s closed. I ring at the neighbours door, they hear about the story and they get a great idea to have to lamb for dinner or that we sell it for 1000 pesos (around 100 euro). His wife disagrees and advices us to give the lamb to the police who are in a car just a little bit further on the road. The man takes the sheep and walks to the police. Our friend the lamb, which we called Klaas, is going to a crèche, so they tell us. Bye Klaas!
