A charity tour for orphan children

Trudy and Dirk Regter from the Netherlands go on a world tour in a 1915 Ford Model T, covering all continents of the world. They are making this trip with the aim of raising money for orphans worldwide.

To date, they have driven 64,000 miles across 31 countries and have raised more than $45,000 spent on children's projects in Colombia and Bolivia. An earlier trip by Dirk in 2007 from Beijing to Paris in the Model T raised more than $140,000, of which 2 children's projects were built in Mongolia. The last part of their world tour, about 10,500 miles, takes them back home to the Netherlands via Asia. If you support the purpose of this journey, you can take ownership of some of these 10,500 miles of this final leg.

Buy your miles and thus contribute to a better future for orphans.

Today we start after breakfast on the terrace in the neighbourhood of the motel (Galveston inn).
We like to start the trip officially from Bill’s property.

Bill has written and drawn four papers with country roads to Bryan. We could find the route easily and did not need the Garmin. On the road we take a coffee stop and lunch break. There we meet the Birdman.

On the country roads we see we a lot of churches of all kinds of different faiths. I even saw a cowboy church!

The landscape is a bit like some parts of Holland. The temperature increases up to above the 86 degrees F and the water of the model T almost cooks. Dirk had to test his invention, a fan to the front of the radiator.
The traffic lights have been horizontally hung instead of vertical like in Holland.

Bill telephoned between the model T friends and at a junction close by Anderson stands Ross Lilleker with its model T and accompanies us for the last stage.

We arrive at 6 PM. Ben Hardeman and Nancy of Texas T Parts invited some friends to meet us and a have a nice cold dish together.

We are waiting for the cars, they are in the harbour now and we hope that we can pick them up today or tomorrow.

Bill Sherrill from The Space City T’s club, here in Houston, brought us from the airport to our hotel in his big Ford Pick Up.

Saturday in the afternoon we are invited to visit their Annual Ice Cream Social.

That will be our first meeting with Model T people here in the States.

Just like in South Africa is feels that Model T drivers are one big worldwide family.

    Thursday 29 November – Day 160

Posted on 29 November 2012 by DirkJan

    Donderdag 29 november dag 160

Daar vertelt Dirk over onze reisavonturen.

    The Model A of Louise

    November 29th – day 161

Posted on 29 November 2012 by DirkJan

Today we have a day of rest.

Dirk-jan and Inge wants to visit theTableMountainand go by taxi to the centre ofCape Town.

Unfortunate there is too much wind and the entrance to the mountain is closed. The mountain is covert by a cloud cover.

For the evening we are invited at a special club meeting of the Early Ford Car Club.

Dirk tells about our travel adventures.

There is a lot of interest in the Model T and most of the people are wondering how it is possible that an old car like this can make such a journey.

Dirk gets some presents of the chairman of the club; Malcolm Leech, under which some club caps and an emblem of the club.

At the end of this pleasant evening the club wants to take a picture of the whole team including the club caps.

At our way back to the house of Greq and Louise, we visit the garage of Greq and Louise to see his oldtimers.

    The Model A of Louise

After we arrived in our guesthouse we opened a bottle of champagne to celebrate our successful arrival inCape Town.

Tomorrow morning we will go to the harbour to put the cars into the container.

In the afternoon we go to the airport and fly via Munich to Holland.

    November 28th – day 160

Posted on 28 November 2012 by DirkJan

We slept very well in our “holiday house”

We have a beautiful view on the Tabelmountain.

Today we have to arrange our departure toHollandand the shipping of the Model T and the LandRover.

Dirk and Dirk-jan changes the tyres we got from Cavin Casey from Harrismith and put the old tyres under the Model T.

In the evening we have a meeting at the Crank handle club inCape Town

There are a lot of members of the club and Dirk tells stories about his jouney through Africa.

Dirk explains how a Model T works and the club members inspected the Model T very well.

In the clubhouse is also a Benz from 1901

One of the club members explains how to drive in this Benz.

Dirk and Dirk-jan want to feel how it is to sit in a car like the Benz. At least they decided to continue their world tour in the Model T.

It is a very successful evening and at the end the members collect money for SOS Children’s Villages.
